Connecting & maximizing your gear
Plugging something in is easy. Getting OBS to actually use it โ and use it well โ is the part most tutorials rush past.
๐๏ธ Microphone
Plug it in and set it as your default input
Plug the USB mic into your computer. In OBS, go to Settings โ Audio and set "Mic/Auxiliary Audio" to your new microphone โ not "Default," which can silently switch on you if you plug in headphones later.
Set your gain (volume) correctly
In the OBS Audio Mixer, talk at your normal streaming volume and watch the level bar. Aim for it to peak in the yellow, occasionally touching orange โ if it's hitting red and flattening out, you're "clipping" and will sound distorted. Turn the mic's gain knob down, or lower the input level in OBS's Advanced Audio Properties.
Maximize it: placement and filters
- โPosition the mic 4โ6 inches from your mouth, slightly off to the side (not directly in front) to reduce harsh "p" and "b" pops.
- โAdd a cheap pop filter or foam windscreen โ cuts plosive pops noticeably.
- โIn OBS, right-click your mic source in the Audio Mixer โ Filters โ add Noise Suppression (removes fan/keyboard hum) and a light Compressor (evens out loud/quiet moments).
๐ท Webcam
Add it as a Source
In OBS, click + under Sources โ Video Capture Device โ choose your webcam from the list โ set resolution to match your webcam's best output (commonly 1920x1080).
Position and crop it
Drag the corner handles (hold Alt while dragging in OBS to crop instead of stretch) to size your webcam into a corner of your scene without covering gameplay or chat overlays.
Maximize it: lighting and white balance
- โPut your light source (lamp, LED panel, or window) in front of you, not behind โ backlighting turns you into a silhouette.
- โMost webcams auto white-balance, but if your video looks orange or blue-tinted, check the manufacturer's companion app for a manual white balance setting.
- โIf your webcam supports it, turn off auto-focus hunting on busy backgrounds โ a plain wall or bookshelf behind you helps.
๐น๏ธ Capture Card (console streaming only)
Connect it
HDMI out from your console โ into the capture card's "in" port โ HDMI out from the capture card โ into your monitor (for passthrough) โ USB from the capture card โ into your PC.
Add it in OBS
Add Source โ Video Capture Device โ select the capture card โ set resolution/FPS to match your console's output settings exactly, or you'll see stretching or lag.
Maximize it: fix input lag
- โEnable passthrough mode so you're playing off the low-latency HDMI passthrough, not the USB feed into OBS (which has a slight delay).
- โMatch your console's output resolution/frame rate exactly to the capture card's input settings to avoid conversion lag.
- โUse a "Game Capture" mindset: keep the capture card's own software closed if it's fighting with OBS for the same device.
Once mic, webcam, and (if needed) capture card are all added as Sources, group them per Scene (Starting Soon / Live / BRB) so switching scenes automatically swaps your whole layout instead of you manually hiding sources mid-stream.
